Cakes are cut in a special way and there are only a few people who know about it. There is actually a reason behind this. It really has nothing to do with tradition or for some art sake but for practical reasons. Obviously, a cake should be cut in a nice way and not in a way that looks butchered. You analyze the structure, if it is a tiered or pillared cake; so that you may be able to estimate how much you must take in every layer. The newlyweds are the first to cut the cake, which means that they should be the first to know about the procedure of properly cutting the cake. They need to make two cuts with the brides hand on the middle handle of the knife while the groom’s hand is covering hers. The feeding each other part represents the value of sharing and support to one another.
If, however, you would want that other people would do the cutting then make sure you make initial instructions to them to avoid untoward accidents that might happen to your cake in the middle of the ceremony. The proper way is to cut the cake starting from the bottom tier. But never cut beyond the second to avoid the cake from tumbling down due to the heavy weight from the top. You just need to cut from the outside two inches and around the end layer. When it’s done, continue at the second layer, but once your reach the first tier you need to remove it. This is specially saved for the bride and groom’s part. At the reception, usually the caterer knows better about these things so the only instructions that you need to give them is whether you want them to leave the top tier alone so they won’t serve it to your guest. Depending on your options, you may ask them to serve it if you don’t intend to keep the top tier.
Once the cake slices are ready, you may follow the tradition of serving it to each other’s parent sides. It will make a good presentation to your cake slices if you place them on elegant serving sets. If you want it extra memorable, you can have those serving cakes and knife engraved with your names. In the next years occasion whether it’s your wedding anniversary or your future children’s birthday, you will be reminded of the special day in your life every time you will be using the knife and the serving sets.
