Music has often been regarded as the language of the soul. For most couples, it’s the language of love. Before, romantic men would serenade the girl they loved with a song which speaks of the love they have for that special girl. What better way to express how you feel than by means of music? Music is a universal language, used by man to communicate their feelings right from the dawn of time. Since weddings are a celebration of love, what better way to make this occasion meaningful by incorporating songs that will speak of their love story. I’m sure that you will agree with me that there is a song for every event in a person’s life. A song you remember when you first kissed, a song you remember on your first date, a song that reminds you of the first time you were introduced. Finding the right wedding songs for your big event is not that hard if you use your heart. Choose the songs that are meaningful to both of you.
Now, let’s talk about the ceremony music. Music here should be solemn. Whatever kind of ceremony you will have, whether it is Catholic or Christian, select songs that will coincide with your own belief. I always get teary eyed when I see the bride walking down the aisle accompanied by her father. Before, the traditional music used here is the classical piece by Richard Wagner entitled "The Bridal March" or Pachelbel’s "Cannon in D" but since couples now are more conventional, sometimes the bridal march will be the couple’s theme song. You can have a soloist sing the song. Sometimes the person who sings the song adds a lot of meaning to it. In one wedding I attended, the groom’s teenage daughter gave a beautiful rendition of a song special to the couple. It was very moving. If there are no vocalists in your family, that‘s not a problem since there are a lot of wedding singers you can hire for the ceremony.
Sometimes the bridal processional music will have to be picked from a list provided by the church. Just be sure to check the restrictions of your church when it comes to the music that will be permitted. Most of the time, the choices are traditional religious or classical music.
When it comes to the music during the reception proper, one of the most anticipated events is the couple’s first dance but for me, another memorable event would be the bride and the father of the bride’s dance together. For the couple’s first dance together, you could choose a song which is memorable for both of you as a couple, for the bride and father of the bride dance together a good song to play is "Dance with my father" by Luther Vandross.
Wedding music can also be more memorable by including music which celebrates your heritage. This is often included as a special feature rather than the main music for the entire occasion. It can also add a lot of fun if you surprise your other half with music that speaks of his/her cultural background. For example if your groom has a Scottish heritage, why not hire a professional bagpiper who will play when you exit the church after the wedding ceremony or much better to welcome you when you arrive at the wedding reception venue. Or, you can treat your guests by a troupe of Celtic Dancers if you or your other half is from Ireland.
If the bride or groom is gifted with a great singing voice, you can add more meaning to the song and the event by dedicating a special song to your spouse during the ceremony or the reception and if you are a closet composer, you can compose a song that will add more meaning to the ceremony.
