The wedding cake’s top tier is usually saved by newlyweds as a form of tradition. The cake is saved for their anniversary or for their first born child’s christening. However, if you will not properly follow these steps that will keep the cake fresh until the next year, possibilities are it will either get frostbite or will turn sour. Once this happen, the wedding day will not be remembered as good as you want it be. So keep an eye on these steps and you will keep memories fresh until the next in time for your anniversary.
Cake toppers, flowers, and other decorations must be removed from the cake. You may, however, leave those small decorations as long as they are made of icings. If you notice that the cake board is unwrapped, remove the cake from the board and then wrap the board with foil. By doing this, your cake will not taste like cardboard or plastic.
Next thing to do is to freeze your cake for 20 minutes to let the icing get a little firmed so that it will not stick to the wrapper.
When the freezing step is done, next is to prepare the cake for the wrapping procedure. The goal here is to cover completely the cake and that it is airtight free. Doing otherwise will let molds get inside the wrapper thus speeding the process of spoiling your cake.
For this next step, you will need aluminum foils to be wrapped at least in two layers. The foil acts as the protective layer and shall prevent your cake from tasting like burnt inside the freezer.
Lastly, you will need a container where you can store your cake as an additional protection.
Here comes your anniversary day, it is time to defrost your cake by using your refrigerator. Let it stay there for two hours and when the defrosting is done, you may remove it from its wrapper and continue the defrosting process with the wrapper taken off. When cake’s ready to serve, leave it awhile under a room temperature.
You can ask the baker to bake a new cake, in case you forgot to reserve the top tier, for your anniversary. Don’t worry about requesting for a new cake since those are not as expensive as your original cake and this time you may have it smaller. This is a better if you will be moving to another location or traveling most of the time then a smaller cake will do.
Initially, the reason why they need to save up the top part of the cake is for the christening of their first child. But not most of them get to have a baby right away thus the idea on saving the cake for anniversary was popularized.
